Music Industry Monday

Are you the artist that’s been putting out music but not getting a good return in streams? With the recent saturation of the music market, it’s become harder and harder for up and coming artists to get their music noticed & heard. It can be extremely disheartening & a lot of people tend to give up when the going gets tough. I am here to tell you NOT to give up your musical pursuit. Today I will be going over a few ways to not only get your music out there but to get it heard by more than just your circle.

Let’s Start with Proper Distribution

Sure you can distribute a song. But what is good song distribution if you don’t do it right? I’ve always said that if you want to distribute music, you have to have a few things in place.

  1. A Kick-ass Album Cover
  2. A Catchy Song Title
  3. An Amazing Song (Obviously)

These are listed in order of importance (my opinion, of course). Coming from a creative, visual content background I have always noticed that first impressions are everything. The first thing that someone sees when scrolling through Spotify isn’t the song’s name or the song itself. It is the album art. If you have a lackluster album cover, people will skip right over it. I know for a fact that if I see an album cover that looks like garbage I will run away. Don’t lie & say you haven’t done the same thing. It’s not very good to get that music noticed.

Creative Tips:

Making a good looking album cover doesn’t always require a ton of money. As long as you have a phone, a camera, or an artsy friend you can make magic happen with the tools at your disposal. Here are a few tips to make that album cover shine:

  • Use Complementary Color Schemes
  • When taking pictures, make sure the image is crisp & clean (not too dark)
  • Use a font that not only looks good but matches the vibe of your music
  • Use the grid system for placing important elements on the album cover
  • Canva & Pinterest are great resources for finding inspiration, USE THEM!

I could go on about how to make the perfect album cover but I don’t like to force my creativity on other people. Experiment with different elements & photography & find what works for you! You will get your music noticed with a great piece of art.

The last two important pieces to distribution are more up to the musician than anything else. Of course, you’ll want a catchy song title that stands out among the rest. Your music will also have to be equally as good but you knew that.

Post-Distribution:

All right, now you’ve distributed your song and it’s about to be released to the world. What do you do? It’s a mistake to think that it’s time to rest on your laurels and wait for the song to “pop-off” as they say. No, you have to work to get your music heard.

There are a few things that you can do pre-release to set yourself up for success:

  • Start reaching out to blogs
  • Apply for playlists (Spotify Included)
  • Make some Pre-Save Campaigns
  • Create Marketing Content & Post
  • Bombard your followers with information about the release
  • Endlessly Self-Promo everywhere

Speaking of self-promo, with Artist Republik you can do a lot of what I just mentioned! We have an excellent network of blogs that are hungry for more music to post. We also have our playlist curators that are constantly searching for new talent to place on their lists. Keep in mind that THIS IS ALL BEFORE YOUR SONG EVEN GOES LIVE!

What about after?

Once your song is live & you have a few blogs posting about the song & a few playlists bumping your track you still have your work cut out for you. There is a large variety of things that you can do once your song makes it out to the world. Here are just a few:

  • Promote the blog posts / get more blogs in on the action
  • Keep applying to those playlists!
  • Create some ad campaigns to help boost your music to new audiences
  • Social media is KEY, keep hitting your followers about your music
  • Self-Promo is hugely important

As I said, there are plenty more ways past everything that I’ve mentioned. But these are great, inexpensive ways to get started. You and your music are a business. You will get out of it what you put into it.

The world is ripe with talent right now and it becomes more apparent every day. With new music dropping like rain in Seattle, it’s becoming more and more important for artists to differentiate themselves. By having a solid marketing strategy at your disposal, you can do great things and begin to get your music noticed. You just have to get a good start.
