Getting into the music industry can be as easy as 1, 2, 3. As technology continues to evolve, the barrier to entry has only gotten smaller and smaller. When most people think of the industry, they automatically assume that the industry is comprised of artists. To an extent, it is! But what many don’t consider is how the industry is built around the business. What does a business need to run successfully? A dedicated team of people who specialize in all sorts of categories. Today, I will be breaking down just a few of the different jobs in the music industry!

Music Producer

Starting towards the bottom, we’ve got everyone’s favorite: the music producer. These guys and gals are responsible for getting an artist’s sound off the ground. They not only act as a resource for creativity on the artist side, but they also interface partly with the business aspect of the musician’s career. As an artist, the music producer is your best friend.

Median Salary: $25,000-$500,000


Debatably the lifeblood of many musical acts. The manager is the person responsible for developing an artist & influencing the business side of any artist’s career. On top of helping the artist with constructive criticism on sound & brand, the manager is also responsible for planning, organizing & negotiating everything under the sun. The manager is a crucial member of an artist’s team!

Median Salary: $30,000-$200,000

Booking Agent

Do you like planning logistics? How about live music? A booking agent career might be for you! As a booking agent, your job is to secure a spot on stage for your artist. In addition, you are responsible for negotiating performance contracts, arranging the equipment, and ensuring that the artist’s time at the venue goes off without a hitch. You are the main point of contact between management and event promoters. It’s a big deal!

Median Salary: $20,000-$300,000

Musical Therapist

With the rise of mental health awareness around the world, musical therapy has become a huge source of help for people. Musical therapists help to improve the mental health of struggling individuals. They help to manage stress & pain both emotionally and physically. It’s a great job for anyone interested in helping others through the power of music!

Median Salary: $57,000

Music Journalist

Finally, if you love what you do, why not teach it? Many music industry professionals take to teaching to help see the industry live on in newer generations. Music teachers can work for schools or have their private lessons. Either option is a great path forward as a career.
